Our top 5 Antipodean cafes in London!

Back in 2009, speciality coffee in London was pretty hard to come by. This may be hard to believe, as there are tons of speciality cafes scattered in practically every borough now.

However, in came a wave of Antipodean culture that completely transformed the London coffee scene (for the better!) Shelagh Ryan, of Lantana, noted that this antipodean wave brought a step change in innovation marked by an increased emphasis placed on the product quality and barista skills.

Delicious salads, open sandwiches and other great bakes and bites started lining the coffee bars, and our eyes were opened to the wonders of the flat white.

So without further ado, here are our top 5 picks of London’s best Antipodean cafes.

Kaffeine – 66 Great Titchfield St, Fitzrovia, London W1W 7QJ

One of the original ‘third wave’ coffee shops in London and still one of the best. Owner Peter Dore-Smith now has two sites, this one, the original and another a short walk away on Eastcastle St. They have always stayed loyal to Square Mile, but they do have an amazing selection of guest roasters. Still up there as one of the best cafes in London. https://kaffeine.co.uk/

Antipode – 28 Fulham Palace Rd, Hammersmith, London W6 9PH

Antipode is one of Hammersmith’s first speciality coffee spots, and even though they have some good competition, they are still absolutely killing the game with their Square Mile brews. We’re not often in West London, but if we’re off to Heathrow for a city break, we often ask our taxi driver to make a pitstop here… https://antipodelondon.co.uk/

Brickwood Coffee & Bread – various locations

Delicious coffee and freshly baked bread – what more could you want?! With four locations (Balham, Tooting, Clapham and Streatham), Brickwood is the perfect Aussie neighbourhood cafe. Whether you’re just popping in for an oat flattie, or staying a bit longer for brunch, you’re in good hands here. They even have their own blend of Caravan coffee. http://www.brickwoodlondon.com/

Timmy Green – 11 Sir Simon Milton Square, Westminster, London SW1E 5DJ

Part of the Daisy Green Collection, Timmy Green is a stylish brunch spot in Victoria that serves consistently great Roasting Party coffee. They have all the usual Aussie brunch items (avo toast, The Bondi, delicious granola) alongside some unique dishes (like Unicorn waffles!) This is the perfect place to caffeinate on the weekends when you have a little bit more time, as chances are you will want more than one brew! https://www.daisygreenfood.com

Lantana – 44-46 Southwark St, London SE1 1UN

Founded by the Queen of casual dining, Shelagh Ryan (with sister Caitlin and Michael Homan), Lantana is one of London’s most loved Aussie-style brunch and coffee hangouts. Serving excellent Alchemy Coffee alongside a menu jam-packed full of delicious dishes (we recommend the corner fritters, to die for!), you can’t really go wrong here. https://lantanacafe.co.uk/
